10 In our study, OP poison ingestion was higher among students (35.96%), while 21.67% were housewives, 14.29% were farmers, 15.27% were service holders, and 12.81% were in other occupations which is consistent with the study conducted in the tertiary care centre of Nepal. The poisoning is more common among the age group less than 30 years, reflecting their exposure to stress, possibly due to failure or frustration in their study, personal relationships, exams, or jobs. 7 The findings of our study were consistent with those studies. 6 While in another study conducted in the eastern part of Nepal, 56.4% of the patients with poisoning presented within the age group of 15-30. One study found that the most vulnerable to poisoning were those aged 20-29 years. In this study, we found that in the age group 16-30, the ingestion of OP poison was the most common, and in the age group >60, the ingestion of poison was least, which was 50.74% and 1.97% respectively. 8 This study showed that the incidence of poisoning in women was slightly higher than in men, with the female to male ratio of 1.5:1 which is consistent with other studies with similar settings. One study conducted in China reported that OP poisoning accounts for 17.2% of pesticide category poisoning, 6 43.5% in the eastern part of Nepal 7 and 32.8% in India. In our study, 47.54% had OP poisoning among all poisoning presenting to the ED. Organophosphorus poisoning is one of the most frequent causes that can lead patients to visit ED. Convenience sampling was done and the sample size was calculated using the following formula: The exclusion criteria include those patients or their relatives who were unwilling to give consent, patients with trauma, accident, severe illness and other diseases that lead patients to ED. ![]() The inclusion criteria in this study were all the patients present in the ED with acute poisoning. ![]() Acute poisoning by organophosphorus was diagnosed by acute exposure of fewer than 24 hours with the clinical features of increased saliva and tear production, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, small pupils, sweating, muscle tremors, and confusion. Patients from age 60 years were included and divided into 5 groups, the age groups from 60. ![]() Ethical clearance was taken from the Institutional Review Committee of Bardiya Hospital (Reference number: 01/2075-76). A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Emergency Department of Bardiya Hospital, a secondary care centre from 17 th July, 2018 to 14 th January, 2022.
